The ITU TSB has just issued Collective Letter 5, which concerns the upcoming meeting of ITU-T Study Group 16 Geneva, 19 - 30 July 2010. It also contains some information regarding the JCT-VC meeting to be held on site at ITU headquarters under WP3/16 auspices during 21-28 July 2010 (including weekend sessions).
The collective letter can be found at:
http://www.itu.int/md/T09-SG16-COL-0005/en.
A web registration page has been established for registration to attend the JCT-VC meeting. There will not be any meeting facilities fee. It is strongly recommended that all participants pre-register at least two weeks before the event. The registration link is:
http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/edrs/ITU-T/miscellaneous/edrs.registration.form?_eventid=3000155.
Item 13 in the Collective Letter concerns entry visa applications. Meeting attendance registration needs to be completed before applying for an entry visa. Please note that Switzerland is now part of the Schengen system, and the visa must be requested at least four (4) weeks before the date of beginning of the meeting.
Item 12 in the letter concerns hotel information and the availability of discount rates for hotels. Details about that can be found at http://www.itu.int/travel/.
My recommended strategy for most people would be to stay at a hotel near the Gare de Cornavin central train station. Any hotel will give you a transport card for free use of local public transportation during your stay, and from the Cornavin station you can catch a bus or tram to the ITU headquarters. Don't forget to bring your transport card with you, as fines for not having it with you are stiff!
If you prefer staying closer to the ITU and walking to the meeting rather than using the approach suggested above, the closest places to stay are likely to be the Hotel Intercontinental, the Hotel de Grand-Pré, or the Hotel Les Nations.
(Incidentally, you can also get free train transportation from the airport to central Geneva when you arrive -- if you remember to locate the machine that dispenses free passes near the exit doorway *before* you leave the luggage pick-up / customs area of the airport. Look at the left of the Green customs exit.)
The desk for picking up your badge on the day of your first arrival at the meeting will be at the entry of the ITU Montbrillant building, but it is only open during the weekdays. If your hotel is near the Cornavin train station, the most convenient public transportation method to the ITU Montbrillant building is likely to be to take the number 13 or 15 tram from the front of the train station to the Sismondi stop. If you miss the Sismondi stop, the next stop is Nations, which is the last stop on the route and is also just a short walk to the ITU.
Once you get into the ITU building entrance, you'll see some monitors near the elevators that will show which room the meeting will be in. One column on the display will be about which building the meeting is in: T = Tower, M = Montbrillant. If the meeting is in the Tower, you may need some help finding the pathway from the badge desk to the meeting room (basically, you go up to floor number 1, pass through a connecting passage to the Varembé building until you get to the entrance reception area of the Varembé building, then go down a spiral staircase, zig-zag scan your way left, right, left, and right, and go down another stairway or two into the 2nd basement of the Tower). You can ask the reception guard for a map.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you happen to first come during the weekend, the only entrance open is the main ITU building (the 15-floor Tower). You will not be able to collect your badge during the weekend, but can get into the facilities if (a) you pre-registered; and (b) leave your passport at the ITU reception.
We will begin the JCT-VC meeting at approximately 0930 hours on 21 July 2010. Badge pick up will open at 0830 hours, or it is possible in the day before.
